Periodontitis Treatment

A healthy periodontium (supporting structures of the teeth) is not a given. In fact, many adults suffer from inflamed gums, which often manifest in the early stages as slight swelling or sensitivity. These initial signs are often underestimated, but behind the condition known as periodontitis lies a serious danger – not just for the teeth, but also for the overall health of the body.

The science of periodontology focuses on diagnosing and treating this condition. With the help of microbiological tests, bacterial diseases can be detected early, even before the patient experiences initial symptoms such as pain or discomfort.

After a diagnosis, we gently clean the gum pockets to reduce inflammation. Timely intervention can prevent the regression of the jawbone. In severe cases, it is also possible to reconstruct bone tissue.

Procedure for Periodontitis Treatment

  • A thorough professional dental cleaning serves as the starting point.
  • The patient receives instructions on effective brushing techniques, which can be practiced once or twice if needed.
  • At the end of the preliminary treatment, we measure the depth of the gum pockets and take X-rays to accurately document the condition of the periodontium.

  • Under local anesthesia, we gently clean the gum pockets and root surfaces (“curettage”).
  • This treatment is carried out over two to four sessions, depending on the extent of the condition.

  • Aftercare is the most important component of the entire treatment plan. Patients with gum inflammation often remain at risk, making consistent maintenance therapy essential.
  • In addition to effective at-home dental care, which often requires the use of dental floss or interdental brushes, regular follow-up exams (every three to four months) and professional cleanings are indispensable.

The Key to Success

The long-term success of the treatment critically depends on a combination of consistent at-home dental care and professional follow-up. Without these measures, there is a high risk that periodontitis will recur after some time.
