Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)
A root canal treatment becomes necessary when the soft tissue inside the tooth, called the pulp, becomes inflamed or has died. In some cases, the dentist may recommend this procedure preventively to avoid a potential inflammation. During a root canal treatment, the inflamed tissue or dead nerve is removed from the root canals. Using electronic length measurement, the dentist accurately determines the length of the root canals. The inside of the tooth is then thoroughly cleaned with fine, flexible instruments. After applying a sterile medication, the canals are sealed with a special filling material. Although the tooth is no longer supplied with blood, it remains in the dental arch. Since the tooth can become brittle over time, a crown is often needed to ensure its long-term stability.

Precise determination of root canal length is crucial for long-term tooth preservation. While X-rays were previously required for this measurement, modern root length measurement instruments now allow for a more gentle and precise method. The costs for this measurement are incurred per root canal. Private health insurance providers usually fully cover this innovative technology. However, for patients with statutory health insurance, this is an additional cost service.
